Valencia has worked hard to improve her one-handed shot and finish. Better shooting technique, combined with her uncanny ability to get open for good shots, makes last Saturday’s high shooting percentage NO fluke. I was also happy to see her give up a few open looks in the fourth quarter to instead pass to a teammate. It’s a bit of charity right now since the others don’t shoot as well as she does, but it shows she’s maturing into a great leader!
By the way, Valencia made full use of that “sweep” option I added to Michigan last week, driving all the way for layups. You know, the girls silently signal that play on their own by having the point guard dribble along one side line or the other, while the others sweep to one side and one wing provides a “fake” ball screen. Pretty sophisticated for mostly 5th graders!
